Cars, Trucks, and Vans ...
Jim had a good laugh about my blog post yesterday, and he asked, "Have we really had 18 cars?" As we began to reminisce about our series of Clunkers, we realized that we had actually had 23 cars, trucks, and vans over the past 30 years. Too funny ... Just so you don't think we are the types of people that buy new vehicles every couple of years because we are always in need of the latest and greatest, I thought I'd tell you a little about the wide variety of vehicles that the Lord has blessed us with. 1965 VW Bug * cute, adorable, every girl's dream * oops ... we hadn't yet figured out the need to check the oil regularly 1972 Datsun B210 * we went airborne while jumping a snow bank in this one* it got hit in a parking lot, so we had to tie the doors shut with a rope between them 1970's VW Fastback * new neighbor called the police to report that we had a "junker" parked in our front yard ... "this isn't a junk yard, you know." But, it wasn't just parked, it was our daily transportation. I had to go out and prove to the police that it actually ran. 1970's Toyota Station Wagon (blue) * oops ... still hadn't figured out to check the oil regularly 1970's Toyota Station Wagon (white) * no keys for this car ... we had to hot wire it every day. Gregg (age 2) learned to hotwire cars at a very young age. 1960's Chevy Pickup * we lived on a little farm, so Jim said we "needed" a pickup 1970's Datsun Pickup * total failure on Jim's part to take his wife's advice and NOT buy this one 1970's Buick * big, boat of a car ... but it ran* given to us by a car dealer that wanted to get rid of the clunker 1970's Chevy Malibu * given to us by friends wanting to get rid of their clunker 1980 Nissan 210 * paid 24% interest on this nice used car * didn't know anything about finances at that point* had to sell it to pay for college 1980 Honda Civic (4 speed) * great car for a few years* at 200,000 miles our mechanic told us it was ready for the junk yard 1980 Honda Civic (5 speed) * replaced the 4 speed ... same year, same model, same color, but less miles 1988 Honda Civic * bought brand new ... had 3 children* immediately got pregnant with twins 1984 Toyota Van * our first van, bought just before the twins were born* seated 7 (had 5 children)* a few months later I got pregnant with 6th child 1985 Ford Clubwagon * a Prison Van(previously owned by Dept. of Immigration/Deportation) * bars between driver's seat and passengers (removed, but later realized they could have come in handy)* fiberglasss seats (no padding) ... holes cut in seats for seatbelts* metal interior (no padding, no ceiling, no carpet)* flames shooting out of the exhaust pipe BIG step up in vehicles after Jim got his first teaching job with the public school system, which paid a lot more than the private schools he had previously taught for. 1991 Ford Clubwagon (15 passenger) * owned for 12 years* put 185,000 miles on it* LOVED it 1994 Ford Escort Station Wagon * owned for 10 years* put almost 200,000 miles on it* sold it to friends who put another 40,000 miles on it 1995 Ford Escort Hatchback * owned for 12 years* currently is Josh's car 1990's Dodge Caravan * Jim's Painting Van 1988 Honda Accord * Grampa bought it brand new when he was 70* Now it is our "Kid's Car"* Currently only has about 125,000 miles on it (at 20 years old) 2002 Ford Focus Hatchback * Jim's Car 2003 Ford Focus Station Wagon * Laurel's Car 2002 Ford Clubwagon 15 passenger * Familly Van Only 3 of the cars were purchased brand new. Every other car was between 2 and 15 years old when we purchased them (or they were given to us). I hope this brought back fun memories for some of you. I'm sure we are not the only ones who have memories of all of the fun Clunkers we've had to drive. I really think that it is GOOD for young adults to have to live with "less than perfect", in order to develop character. Seriously, even if we could afford to, I would never go out and buy a newer model car for my teens. It's good for them to have to drive Clunkers ... or to ride their bikes because they can't even afford a Clunker. None of our kids have suffered negatively when they have waited to get their driver's licenses. They've learned to ride their bikes. They've learned to take the city bus. They've learned to budget their money for car insurance. (Our kids can get their licenses and drive the "Kid's Car"; but they must pay for their own insurance.) Comments: great post Laurel, I just found your blog... my first car was a 1972 Datsun B210 it was GREAT!! never had any issues with it, bright yellow, I never lost it in a full parking lot ;) & it was only $500.! thanks for this post! Comments: My personal favorite was the ORIGINAL 15 passenger van. Oh the memories I have associated with that van! Comments: Memory Lane!! How fun! Comments: Totally on the same page! Hey, you get what you can afford, and deal with it. It has to get from point a to b! I love seeing the looks when we bought our 15 passenger....hey it may not be fashionable, but I doubt our kids care as long as we are together!
